How to Choose the Academy
At Rilion Gracie Jiu-Jitsu of Miami Lakes we always offer one free week trial for our classes- this way it welcomes any person who would like to see what our school is like and the way we teach the classes.
How to tell if the Academy is right for you?
When choosing an academy to train at, it is important to feel that this is the right place for you. How can you tell? Listen to your gut instinct. After trying out the academy, your instincts should give you a sense if this academy is the right place for you to train at. The environment and the culture of the school will be apparent to you during this initial trial period. As for the physical expectations- give this time to develop, as one needs to practice Jiu-Jitsu with frequency to attain the physical endurance and fitness needed to train regularly.
Training with the Gi
For those who have never trained with a Gi before, getting used to this heavy garment may be a process unto itself. The Gi (or Kimono) weighs between 3.5lbs to 5lbs. The lighter variants used to be called "Summer" Gi and they do have the advantage of being easier to train and move around in, but their disadvantage is that they are easier to grab and manipulate. The lighter Gi also helps a competitor make weight at a tournament if their weight is close to being at the top of their weight class. These days, the "Pearl Weave" is an intermediate between the Summer or Single Weave and the heavier Double Weave. The Pearl Weave is very popular and is probably the most common weave found on the mats. It allows for a good range of movement and flexibility while retaining enough structure and stiffness to still make it difficult to grip. The "Double Weave" Gi is the more traditional heavy Kimono. Its heavyweight weave does make the fabric more difficult to grab and the thickly reinforced lapels of the Double Weave are also difficult to grab and twist, which makes it difficult to apply strangulations and chokes on practitioners who wear the double weave Gi.
What if I don't have a Gi?
If one does not own a Gi it is still possible to attend the Gi class in regular athletic wear to sample the class. At the time of signing up a Gi for purchase is available.
